Obama backs funding for transportation infrastructure

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in a letter to the National Industrial Transportation League, renewed his support for infrastructure funding, freight rail transportation and the country's domestic waterways.
"Now is the time to invest in our future and strengthen our core infrastructure," Obama wrote in an Oct. 25 letter to the NIT League.
Obama, in his letter, reemphasized his support for a $60 billion National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank, as a way to "enhance" current federal investment in infrastructure.
The Democratic candidate also noted his support for the Water Resources Development Act, which included $3.9 billion for lock and dam improvements on the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway.
And Obama called for more investment in railroads, calling rail transportation a "highly efficient way to transport freight and relieve congestion on our highways."
"We cannot afford to wait on funding for updated infrastructure and technology to meet increasing passenger and freight demand," Obama wrote.
Obama wrote to the National Industrial Transportation League after the association asked both candidates to elaborate on their transportation policies.
Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has yet to respond, according to the NIT League.
